fashion, like any other art form, is all about reinterpretation. you get inspired by something, and you evoke that in your creative expression.
many years ago, some friends and i tried to start our own magazine. i was appointed creative director, and one of the first ideas i had for a shoot was to reinterpret childhood outfits into modern day fashion ensembles.
the magazine never took off, and so i never got to realise my idea, but when i started this blog, i was determined to revive the project, and started collecting photos and sourcing the clothes i needed for them.
a few months ago, i discovered back to the future, a project by artist irina werning. and just last week, i saw a similar shoot on america’s next top model. it really made me eager to get my version going for real, and so i’m proud to be able to present the first instalment of child’s play : style rewind.
i’m guessing i’m about 3 years old in this photo, probably my first day of school. i actually kept this satchel for many years, in fact my parents probably still have it at their house. it’s so colourful! for my reinterpretation, i didn’t want to go too literal with the schoolgirl look, so i added some silver heels to make it more of a business look, and popped the collar for some attitude.
dress: closet @ a wear
satchel: a wear
shoes: goodwill thrift store
obviously my photos aren’t as stylised as irina’s or the ones featured in antm, but i’m looking forward to building up a collection of outfits that are inspired by something i once actually wore.
i’ll be posting these up as and when i manage to gather the right items to recreate a look, so watch this space!
