tourist tees

when i travel, i don’t often buy souvenirs, and if i do, it’s rarely a tshirt. one reason for this is that i have too many tshirts that i never wear, but another reason is because for the most part, women’s tourist tees are just lame. there’s no nice way of saying it. they’ll usually have some combination of flowers, butterflies and swirly text, and be available in a variety of pastel colours. meanwhile, the men’s tshirts are usually really cool, with funny taglines or interesting designs; basically, tshirts that you would probably end up wearing quite often.

now, i realise that these women’s tees are obviously designed with women in mind, and many women do enjoy flowers, butterflies and pastel colours. actually, a boyfriend once brought me back a tshirt from quebec, which had butterflies and swirly writing, but the tee was dark purple (my favourite colour) and the design was black and silver, pretty cool. so sometimes it works, but seriously, would it kill them to make some non-girly girl tees every now and again? i see a business opportunity here…

if you’re travelling in the states, even the men’s small will most likely be slightly too big, but sometimes you can get away with it. i just bought this tshirt from austin airport:

it was modelled on a mannequin with breasts, so i assumed it was a women’s shirt, but apparently not. while it fits me alright, it’s not perfect: it’s a little baggier that i like tshirts to be, the crew neck collar is a little higher than i’d like it to be, and the sleeves, obviously, aren’t cap sleeves. but i like the design, and it was only $14, so i decided to go for it with the intention of modifying it later.
