On The Edge: Public Beware

In addition to all the great vintage shops in Dublin’s Temple Bar district, there are a few new design gems hidden away. I recently stumbled upon Public Beware on Essex Street and was intrigued by their edgy, minimalist look. Originally a British brand, Public Beware set up an Irish branch last year, and boasts two floors of contemporary urban design.

The store itself is very cool, like a New York loft apartment or something. The clothes were mostly limited to a monochrome and neutral palette - just how I like it - and the collection featured sleek dresses and tops as well as very cosy-looking pieces in wool and flannel.

Guest Post: Thread Conscious

My friend Nik over at Thread Conscious asked me to write a guest post about vintage in Dublin. I’d never really explored the vintage scene here until doing research for this post, but I was pleasantly surprised at what I found! Since then, I’ve found even more amazing stores, so watch this space for more vintage-inpspired posts!

Yesterday’s flea market findings:

Sheer printed maxi dress
Black and gold cropped sweater
Black lace-embellished blouse
Printed dress with sweetheart neckline and open back
Red leopard print jeans
Journals of Anais Nin, vol. 3
DVDs: Waking Life, Cinema Paradiso, La Vie en Rose
Gold and orange ring

Hot Topic

When I was a teenager, i was obsessed with Hot Topic. I used to go on their website and furiously add things to my wishlist. I never bought anything, but I got some kind of satisfaction from at least making a list of things I would like to purchase had I had the opportunity (I didn’t have a bank card that could be used online, plus the shipping costs to the UK were pretty frightful).

Yesterday, in San Francisco, I went into a Hot Topic store for the first time in my life. Now, I have no idea if it’s just that I’ve grown out of this stuff (probably) or if their stock has got tackier (probably, also), but I was quite appalled at how toolish everything was. To be fair, it has been ten years since I pined over their logo tees and bondage trousers, and since then I think the ‘alternative’ fashion scene has become a lot less alternative and a lot more cliché-mainstream.

Nevertheless, there were a couple of interesting things that, had there been any room in my suitcase, I might have been tempted by.

Black poncho hood sweater, $36.50

I have an obsession with hoods. Specifically, useless hoods. Even if this garment adds very little actual value in terms of warmth, I love it as a layering piece. Very Assassin’s Creed.

pop-up and say ciao

last night i attended the opening event of the missoni for target pop up store at bryant park. the line was around the block but luckily we had an in via some friends of ours.

although missoni is a brand i admire and respect, it’s not one that i’ve always wanted to have hanging in my closet (i’m not big into brights or prints). having said that, i’d seen the pre-launch photos of the collection a couple of days before, and was intrigued to see how the pieces played out in real life.

the side of the building was especially decorated in the famous missoni prints.

vintage viv

last week i was in paris. this week, i’m in new york (don’t worry, i promise my life isn’t always this jet-set).

today i went on a little shopping adventure on mott street, in the heart of chinatown. i’d learnt about its quirky exclusive boutiques and quirky vintage stores from a spot on taxi tv, and decided to check it out after my delicious lunch in little italy. after all, shopping is a great form cardio, and i needed to work off my indulgent spaghetti dish.

my first stop was new & almost new, a little vintage store owned by maggie chan, a delightful chinese new yorker lady. she’s been in the business for seventeen years, and has just moved to this new location recently (two days ago in fact).

this is a blog about style. i prefer the term style because i don't necessarily follow "fashion" or "trends". i appreciate those things, but i prefer to explore real-world style, what people wear in their daily lives (hence the tagline "keepin' it real"), where they shop, but also, from time to time, what's going on in the world of high fashion, and other aspects of fashion design.

i'll also be trying to cover more menswear, as well as hair and makeup, once i learn more about it!

check out the streatstyle facebook page for polls, mini-updates and more!
